Stockport primary schools art competition marks show apartment opening

Children from two Stockport primary schools have taken part in an art competition to mark the opening of the new showhome at the Covent Garden housing development close to Stockport town centre.

Organised by North-West based affordable housing provider, Your Housing Group, 90 students aged 9 to 11 from St Thomas’ CE Primary School and St Joseph’s Stockport Catholic Primary School took part in an art competition to draw or paint the famous ‘Lowry Steps’ on Crowther Street, close to the development, which are depicted in one of the Salford artist’s priceless paintings. Lowry worked as a rent collector in Stockport, so knew the town well, and one of the streets he visited regularly on his rounds was Crowther Street.

The two winners, Olivia Smith aged 11 from St Thomas’ and Kym Tandaan aged 10 from St Joseph’s both won art materials and their framed pictures were hung in the new show apartment that opened on Monday 17 June 2019.
The £9.4m development, which is due to be completed this summer, consists of 74 properties which include two and three bedroom houses and one and two bedroom apartments with a mix of tenures including five for shared ownership, 18 for outright sale and 51 homes for private rent.
Lorraine Donnelly, Director of Development for Your Housing Group said: “It’s fantastic to see this development nearing completion and be able to open the doors to our showhome for the first time. Potential residents will be able to see first-hand the light, bright rooms, spacious layout and high quality fixtures and fittings we offer in all our properties. This scheme is a stone’s throw from Stockport town centre and close to the mainline train station and motorway network making access to Manchester, London and other towns and cities quick and easy.
“We were really impressed with the quality of the entries for our schools art competition and it was extremely hard to pick the just two winners. Olivia and Kim’s pictures stood out for the attention to detail, and both show real talent. We are proud to be able to hang their work in our new show apartment. They add the finishing touch to beautifully designed interior.”
Constructed around London Square close to Stockport town centre, the development is strategically located at the heart of a £1bn masterplan to regenerate Stockport town centre. The development has been supported by a Government grant.
Your Housing Group is a member of the Stockport Housing Partnership. The housing provider was selected by Stockport Council to deliver this significant town centre regeneration scheme, after the local authority, who had initiated the project, assembled the site which had multiple land owners.

Cllr Sheila Bailey, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Stockport said: “This new scheme is a fantastic addition to the town centre and will deliver much-needed housing on the site of former council flats.

“Part of our ambitious regeneration plans are to attract families to live in the town centre, which in turn will support businesses and boost the local economy.

“These are high-quality homes that will impact positively on the surrounding area and meet the varied needs of our residents.”

The scheme was designed by architect IBI Group and built by contactor Bardsley Construction.

Heygreen Park, Wavertree- Edington Street Clean Up

During a sunny afternoon on Edington Street, Wavertree, situated on the border of Heygreen Park, our new build development site, the YHG Community Regeneration Team & Project Lead Gillian Keevey Teamed up with local customers and partners including Bell Group Painters & Decorators, Liverpool City Council Officers & Ward Councillor Clare McIntyre to focus on giving the immediate area a once over.

The aim of the day was to make the area near the front of site look cleaner and brighter as over time it had been neglected with ASB issues such as fly tipping, littering and burnt out items in the corner of the location.

The team quickly began to make an impact as a whirlwind of brushes, shovels, PPE and bin liners kicked into action and after an hour or two the skip, provided by LCC was soon bursting at the seams awaiting removal.

In the background, the Bell Group Painters lead by Karen Fletcher were making their way across the adjoining YHG properties which was also beginning to take shape as a nicely freshened up row of houses, thanks to our Social Value contract obtained when the agreement was set up through procurement.

Whilst the team cracked through the tasks a couple of local customers came out to see what all the fuss was about and after chatting through improvements we hoped to make in that immediate area we had recruited two more Community Angels, who with The Regeneration Teams guidance will have a sustainable model on keeping this space free of future neglect.

Improvement ideas including a new bin store area that was accessible to our Customers to simply keep their bins, rather than having to pull bins through houses each bin day was discussed, along with working with local customer Paul and his Grandson in developing a much-loved Mini Beast & Bee Garden.

Further ideas were also discussed in what was a great forum for YHG Staff & Customers to liaise with local City Council and Council representatives for future improvements.

Heygreen Park offers an exciting mix of 1-bedroom apartments and 2 and 3-bedroom houses, available for private rent. Visit to find out more.
